[2024 Edition] Complete Guide To Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) Fees, Gantry Locations & Operating Timings For Cars

Posted on
by

Introduced in April 1998 to curb and ease peak hour jams, Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) was an enhancement of its predecessor, the Area Licensing Scheme (ALS), which was launched in 1975 to target reducing traffic congestion in the Central Business District.

Today, ERP is used to manage road congestion by charging drivers passing through ERP gantries during operational hours. The aim – though not necessarily the result – is for drivers to use alternative routes, travel outside ERP hours or take alternative forms of transport to avoid ERP charges.

Earlier in 2024, the next-generation ERP 2.0 system was introduced – requiring motorists to replace their In-Vehicle Unit (IU) with a new On-Board Unit (OBU). Unlike the previous generation system, which relied on entry- or point-based charging, ERP 2.0 uses the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). This will eliminate the need for physical gantries – which will be gradually removed from end-2025. Instead, other visual markers will be used to notify motorists of the ERP charging locations.

Here’s a guide to all the gantries in Singapore, their operational hours, and the exact charges.

Complete List Of ERP Gantry Locations And Rates

ERP rates are set generally in periods of 30 minutes and are adjusted to keep traffic moving at an optimal speed range of 20 to 30 km/hour on arterial roads and 45-65km/hour on expressways.

That means if you drive during peak hours, you are likely to pay higher rates. In addition, ERP charges are also determined by the type and size of vehicle – bigger vehicles pay more. ERP is only operational from Mondays to Saturdays, excluding public holidays. In addition, ERP also stops operating at 1pm on the eve of New Year’s Day, Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Puasa, Deepavali and Christmas Day.

ERP rates are reviewed every quarter and adjusted during the June and December school holiday period, based on the traffic conditions at the time.

In total there are 78 ERP gantries and they are split into 3 different traffic areas, expressway, arterial roads, and city cordons.

Ways To Pay Your ERP Charges

All Singapore-registered vehicles are required to install an In-Car /Unit (IU) to drive through ERP gantries. Foreign-registered vehicles, with the exception of goods-vehicles, taxis and buses, can either install an IU at any LTA-authorised inspection centre, or rent from Woodlands or Tuas Checkpoints. Foreign-registered goods-vehicles, taxis and buses are required to have an IU installed in the vehicles. Or rent an IU Currently, there are two modes of payment for ERP charges when driving through an ERP gantry.

You can pay via a stored-value card inserted in your IU using NETS CashCard, NETS FlashPay Card or EZ-Link CEPAS Card. The ERP charges are immediately deducted from the card; Hence it is important to ensure there is sufficient value in the card before travelling.

For those who enjoy the convenience of paying the ERP charges via a credit/debit card without needing to worry about maintaining sufficient value in their stored-value card can register with EZ-Pay or Virtual CashCard (vCashCard) to apply for card payment.

vCashCard charges $0.50 for each top-up including for American Express Credit Cards, but is waived for holders of DBS/POSB Cards and UOB Credit/Debit Cards. On the other hand, the EZ-Pay service is free-of-charge, but it currently accepts DBS/POSB and Citibank Visa/MasterCard credit or debit cards for sign-ups.

Consequences For ERP Violations

If you do not pay your ERP charge due to a defective IU, an expired or improperly inserted stored-value card, or due to insufficient amount in the card, you will be notified of the violation within a few days, which will incur an additional administrative charge.

However, if you choose to pay your ERP violation using the following platforms, you will save $2 from any administrative fee charged in your ERP violation:

Online
AXS stations/AXS e-station/m-station
SAM Kiosks/ Singpost Mobile App/Online
ATM, mobile or internet banking
