In this era of online video streaming, we can assume almost everyone and their grandmother knows about Netflix and even more so when we consider that Netflix is available in over 190 countries around the world. The main regions that Netflix is not available in include China, Russia, Crimea, North Korea and Syria.
Have you ever wondered how much a Netflix subscription costs elsewhere? Are our Malaysian neighbours paying more or less for their subscription? Well, you will find out in this article as we investigate how much a Netflix subscription costs around the world.

Netflix Is Slightly Different For Every Country
Functionally, Netflix is the same everywhere – it is a video streaming service. However, the exact content in every country can be different and prices and packages available are different as well. While most of us should be familiar with the basic, standard and premium plans, Netflix also offers mobile-only plans in some countries.
The content difference means that the shows you can watch in Singapore are different from what you can watch elsewhere. It is unlikely that you can watch Phua Chu Kang or Under One Roof on Netflix anywhere else outside of Singapore.
That said, some regional content may be exported, thus we can binge-watch Terrace House and various K-dramas in Singapore.
United Kingdom (U.K.) And Ireland Can Watch Over 8,000 Netflix Titles
The catalogue of titles (shows, documentaries, animations, and movies) or Netflix library size also differs from country to country.
Netflix users in Slovakia, Bulgaria and Slovenia have access to the top three largest Netflix libraries at 8,525, 8,300 and 8,292 titles, respectively.
For comparison, Singapore has access to 4,768 titles while our neighbour, Malaysia, has access to more than 6,500 titles.
Switzerland And Liechtenstein Pay The Most Expensive Basic And Premium Plans
For the basic plan, the Swiss have to pay CHF 12.90 (about SGD19.61) and the Liechtensteiners have to pay around CHF 18.79 (about SGD28.57). Not only do they have to pay more, but they also pay more for less. The Swiss Netflix library only has 6,870 titles while the Liechtensteiners can only access 7,921 titles.
In comparison, a basic plan in Singapore is only SGD13.98.
But realistically, a basic plan with 720p quality and only one device use isn’t going to cut it for most of us.
For the premium plan which typically streams 4K quality (Ultra HD) + HDR to 4 devices, again, Switzerland has the short end of the stick when it comes to Netflix as they are paying CHF 27.90 (about SGD42.42). This is followed by Liechtenstein at around CHF 18.79 (about SGD28.56).
In comparison, a premium plan cost SGD25.98 in Singapore.
Pakistan Has The Cheapest Basic and Premium Plans
On the other end of the spectrum, Pakistan has the cheapest basic and premium plans at Rs. 450 (around SGD2.18) and RS.1,100 (around SGD5.32), respectively.
Many Other Countries Have Competitively Priced Netflix Subscriptions
Many Other Countries Have Competitively Priced Netflix Subscriptions
Some countries that we may not have guessed, including Turkey and Argentina, also very competitively priced Nettflix subscription plans.
Region | Basic Plan | Premium Plan |
Singapore | SGD 13.98 | SGD 25.98 |
Turkey | TRY242.17 (SGD 9.42) | TRY796.48 (SGD 30.99) |
Argentina | ARS7,035.37 (SGD9.42) | ARS2,3139.32 (SGD30.99) |
In our research, we also found that the Basic plan was not available in every country – hence it was difficult to make a direct price comparison to Singapore’s subscription as the plans are different.
At the same time, Netflix has also started rolling out plans that support ads. This means they can offer a much cheaper tier in some countries for now.
For example, in Australia, the cheapest plan is the Standard with ads pricing plan that costs AUD 7.99 (SGD 6.98). This is half the cost of the cheapest Basic plan in Singapore which is SGD 13.98. The Premium plan in Australia costs AUD 25.99 (SGD 22.69) – which is slightly cheaper, but much closer to the most expensive Premium plan in Singapore at SGD 25.98.
You Can Login To Your Netflix Account Overseas But You Can Only Access Local Content
Due to Netflix’s global presence, it is also possible for you to login to your account while you are overseas. This is good new for those who want to watch their shows while on holiday.
A big BUT is that you would only be able to access the local content there. So, you may want to consider downloading the shows you want to continue watching on your holidays. This will also allow you to watch without internet connection, such as on your flights.
Similarly, if you ever spot a show on Netflix that you want to watch while travelling and make a mental note to watch it later, think again because it may not be available back home.
You Are Billed In The Country You Are Signed Up In
Another interesting fact about Netflix subscription is that if you have relocated to a new country, you will continue to be billed in the currency of the country you signed up in.
To change currency, you will have to cancel your account, wait until the remainder of your month is over, and restart your account in your new country.
Presumably, if you signed up for Netflix in Malaysia and you move to Singapore, you can continue to enjoy your cheaper subscription, but you are locked to Singapore’s library content.
