By now, most Disney (or Star Wars, Marvel or Pixar) fans would be familiar with the Disney+ streaming service. Since 23 February 2021, Disney+ has been available in Singapore – with refreshed content.
While it’s called Disney+, those in the 30s and 40s will have fond memories of the Star Wars franchise, younger kids will enjoy Disney and Pixar content, and individuals of all ages will know the Marvel movie characters. Moreover, there’s also National Geographic for nature lovers and Star for Asian content.
With something for everyone in the family, here are some considerations if you are considering the Disney+ streaming subscription.
No Free Trial For Disney+
Unlike its main competitor Netflix or Amazon Prime video, Disney+ doesn’t offer a free trial for subscribers. This can be a slight bummer for anyone who was thinking of just getting a 1-month free trial, binge-watching Loki, Agatha All Along or The Acolyte , and cancelling after the trial period has ended.
If you’re interested to watch the content, you have to subscribe for the streaming service.
How Much Is Disney+ Subscription?
In Singapore, Disney+ offers two types of subscriptions. There is the Disney+ Standard and the Disney+ Premium.
Monthly subscription for Disney+ Standard costs $15.98 per month, which you can cancel at any point. An annual subscription costs $159.98 per year, or just about $13.33 each month. So, you save about 16.5%, or $2.65 each month, if you opt for the annual subscription.
For Disney+ Premium, a monthly subscription costs $18.98 per month. An annual subscription costs $189.98 per year, or just about $15.83 each month. Again, you save about 16.5%, or $3.15 each month, if you opt for the annual subscription.
For a cost comparison, Netflix currently charges between $13.98 to $25.98 per month, while HBO GO costs $14.48 per month.
Disney+ Offers A Huge Catalogue Of Popular Shows
In our view, the most significant drawing point for Disney+ is the number of content brands that they own. The six brands are Disney, Marvel, National Geographic, Pixar, Star Wars and Star. All six content brands are available in Singapore.
With Marvel and Star Wars, we get to watch all the Marvel and Star Wars movies and the original series created by Disney. However, if you are a fan, then you would have already watched most of these movies before, some multiple times, even before you have Disney+ subscription. So, what would keep us drawn towards keeping our Disney+ subscription?
Disney is smart in this aspect and will constantly space out its releases. For example, Echo premiered in January 2024. This original series is based on the Hawkeye series, which itself is a spin-off the Marvel movies. In June, Disney+ released The Acolyte from the Star Wars franchise. Then in September, it premiered Agatha All Along. Coming up in December 2024, there is the Star Wars: Skeleton Crew series, and from the Marvel franchise, Your Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man will launch in January 2025, and Daredevil: Born Again in March 2025. The final series on the slate for now is Ironheart for June 2025.
Clearly, the idea here is that instead of letting you binge-watch the episodes at once (which is what we all want to do!), Disney is spacing out the episodes and the various series.
For certain movies, there is also IMAX Enhanced, along with 4K Ultra HD and Dolby Surround Sound, so you get to enjoy the most immersive home viewing experience as long as your television or projector can support it.
Disney+ Shows Are Great For Kids
If you have young kids, then Disney+ becomes valuable. With its Disney & Pixar brand, Disney has a huge range of kid-friendly programmes that will keep your kids entertained, perhaps even, too much for their own good. It’s like having a cartoon network (remember them?) on demand 24/7.
If you want something more educational, National Geographic offers great content such as documentaries, wildlife series and Nat Geo kids that are specially curated for younger children to watch and learn.
The good thing about Disney + is that you can assign Kids Profile to the profile that your kids use for watching to ensure that they only watch content that is appropriate for them.
Compared to our experience with Netflix, HBO Go and even Amazon Prime, Disney+ may be the most family-friendly video streaming subscription there is.
With Netflix, there are fewer kid-friendly shows that children can typically can access. HBO GO isn’t suitable for young children and Amazon Prime may not offer sufficient content for both adults and children.
Also, because they own multiple content brands, signing up for Disney+ feels like you are getting six distinct, on-demand channels with a single subscription.

For those who are looking for Asian shows (Chinese movies, Korean dramas), under the Star content brand, there is also a wide selection of Korean and Asian shows such as Call it Love, Pandora: Beneath the Paradise and Taiwan Crime Stories.
Disney+ Allows For Up To 7 Profiles With Up To 4 Concurrent Stream
Each Disney+ account allows you to create up to 7 profiles with up to 4 simultaneous streams. Even for bigger families, it’s unlikely that you will need to share profiles with one another. You can also use the ‘Watch Together’ option to watch a show together with your loved ones using different profiles.
If you are keen to give it a try, sign up for Disney+ today under the monthly plan ($15.98/month) This allows you to cancel your subscription after a month with no lock-in period if you don’t think you have enough time to watch the shows.
