If you’ve driven across the border from Singapore to Malaysia, chances are you have heard of or purchased a Touch ‘n Go (TNG) card.

The TNG card is a reloadable card that drivers in Malaysia can use to pay tolls at highways. On 23 January 2025, TNG had launched a new SOS Balance feature, which covers drivers’ toll fees when they have insufficient balance.

TNG is one of the largest digital payment service providers in Malaysia where drivers can use the TNG card to pay tolls at all highways in Malaysia. You can also use your TNG card to pay public bus and train fares and parking in premises that enable TNG payment services.

Buying And Registering Your TNG Card

You can buy a TNG card for only RM10 at several locations such as TNG physical hubs, TNG SPOTs, customer service counters at selected highways and KK Super Mart. TNG SPOTs are manned booths set up at selected petrol stations.

Many people may not know but you can actually register your TNG card online at the MYTouchnGo site so you can be refunded on your balance should you lose your card. You will need either a Malaysian or Singaporean mobile number to register. The cards also have a warranty of 30 days from the date of purchase but make sure you keep the receipt.

If you’re not a regular user of the TNG card, do note that there is a dormancy fee of RM5.00 for cards that have not been in use for the 12 consecutive months that is deducted from the unutilised balance. Another RM5.00 will be charged every subsequent six months after that until the card balance is depleted or up to seven years, whichever comes first.

There is also an expiration date for your card stated on the back of the card. Typically, a TNG card is valid for 10 years.

Reloading Your TNG Card

Each new TNG card starts with a zero balance. You can reload your card up to RM1,500 manually at reload points listed on the TNG website, which include petrol stations, selected highways, train stations, telco stores and convenience shops such as 7-Eleven, Watsons and KK Supermart.

If you top up your TNG card with reload agents, there will be a fee of RM0.50 each time. You can check the TNG website for a list of places that impose a surcharge and others that don’t.

Places that offer TNG card reloads without surcharge include TNG hubs, TNG SPOTs, TNG self-service kiosks, 99 Speedmart outlets, Watsons and Caring pharmacy stores.

You can reload your TNG card with a minimum of RM10 in standard denominations of RM10, RM20, RM50, RM100. RM150, RM200 and RM500.

Not Enough Balance? It’s Okay

Recently, TNG introduced SOS Balance, a new feature that covers users’ toll fees temporarily. In order to be eligible for SOS Balance, you need to be an active user of the TNG e-wallet app. You will need either a Malaysian or Singaporean mobile number to register for a TNG e-wallet account.

After registering to be a TNG e-wallet user, you can add your TNG card to your wallet and pay tolls either by tapping the reader at participating highways. Not all highways allow this so ensure that your card is topped up sufficiently. The toll fare will be deducted directly from your TNG e-wallet.

But, what happens when you’re low on your TNG e-wallet? If you didn’t know, toll payment has been cashless in Malaysia since 2017. If a driver has insufficient balance, he will not be able to pay and pass through the toll booth until assistance arrives, which can cause delay in travels and congestion at toll lanes.

With SOS Balance, users will be able to go through even with insufficient balance on their e-wallet. They will have a 24-hour grace period to reload their TNG e-wallet and settle the outstanding charges. Users must settle these payments within the timeframe to continue accessing their e-wallet.

The SOS Balance feature is available to selected TNG e-wallet users who fulfill requirements, which are clearing all outstanding payments promptly, adding money frequently to the e-wallet and actively using their e-wallet for transactions. According to news report, around 70% of TNG e-wallet users are privy to SOS Balance.

Eligible users don’t have to register for SOS Balance and it is free. To find out if you’re an eligible user, tap the SOS Balance icon or a car icon at the top of your e-wallet home screen. You will see the status, ‘Ready to use’ if you’re an eligible user.

Currently, SOS Balance is available at 31 out of 33 highways across Peninsular Malaysia.
