With school holidays just around the corner, many of us may be scrambling to plan for a family getaway. A short distance away, some may even consider traveling across the border to Johor, Malaysia for a holiday, taking advantage of the favourable currency exchange.
Situated in Johor, Legoland Malaysia has been a popular option for families who want to enjoy the fun of theme parks. However, if you’ve been there and done that and would like a change, there are other theme parks in Malaysia that you can consider.
#1 A’ Famosa Resort
Situated in the heritage Malacca City, A’ Famosa Resort is one of the longest-established parks in the country.
The 20-acre park consists of attractions including a water park, a safari park and an outlet mall. Some of the rides at the water park include a lazy river, sandy beach and one of the longest water slides that reaches a height of 20 metres.

Getting there: A’Famosa is roughly a three-hour’s drive from Singapore. The petrol cost is around RM214.00 (S$64.99) – RM308.00 (S$93.53).
Accommodation: Guests can book a stay at A’Famosa Resort. The resort provides villa-style accommodations, with a standard four-room villa costing RM380 (S$115.40) per night.
Other expenses: There are some kopitiams situated a few minutes away from A’Famosa, including the Ngoh Juan Yong Kopitiam and Alan Grill Western Food.
#2 KidZania
Part of the well-known global Kidzania theme park brand, the outlet in Kuala Lumpur features a 1.8 sq. ft. replica of a metropolitan city complete with a bank, dental office, aviation academy, fire station and design studio.
KidZania mixes fun and learning where children gain exposure to various jobs and skills at more than 50 different attractions themed after jobs within the fully air-conditioned indoor park. For a more immersive experience, children get to dress up in garbs such as firefighter suits and participate in hands-on activities to learn more about various careers.

Getting there: KidZania is located around 25 minutes’ drive from Kuala Lumpur city centre. A drive from Singapore to Kidzania will cost around RM302 (S$91.71) to RM436 (S$132.40).
Accommodation: Situated near Kuala Lumpur city, there are various hotels that you can choose from including the Qliq Damansara Hotel. A standard superior triple room, which fits a single bed and an extra large double bed costs RM470 (S$142.73) a night.
Other expenses: As the theme park is situated within the Curve Shopping Mall, visitors have a variety of options from McDonald’s and TGI Friday’s to Toastmaker and Richeese Factory.
#3 Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park
If you want to enjoy the adventurous fun of theme parks in cool weather, Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park would be the suitable option for you.
Situated around 6,000 feet above sea level, the popular Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park records daily estimated temperatures of 18 degrees Celsius to 25 degrees Celsius, depending on the weather and time of day.
Having underwent a major renovation a few years ago, the 22-acre outdoor park reopened in 2022, welcoming visitors with upgraded rides some of which are themed after Hollywood movies such as a 3D ride, drop tower and hang glider that takes you 65 feet above land. Currently, certain sections of the theme park such as the Night at the Museum and Rio Carnaval Chaos are undergoing maintenance works, so do check the website for updated information before planning your trip.
Tickets: Travelers can purchase one-day tickets that come with three free virtual queue reservations each. Virtual queue allows you to reserve timed entries for rides via the Genting SkyWorlds app.

Getting there: Situated in the state of Pahang, Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park is around an hour’s drive from Kuala Lumpur city centre. A drive from Singapore to the theme park incurs petrol cost of RM337.00 (S$102.34) – RM487.00 (S$147.89).
Accommodation: There are various hotels situated near the Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park. For example, the Grand Ion Delemen Hotel is a relatively new hotel that is around 10 minutes from the theme park by car. Grand Ion Delemen Hotel offers family suites with a queen-size bed and a twin bed at around RM322.00 (S$97.78) per night. It also provides hourly shuttle service from the hotel to the theme park.
Other expenses: Visitors can dine at restaurants within the park or venture to SkyAvenue Complex mall that’s interconnected to the park for more options including Five Guys, Din Tai Fung and Madam Kwan’s.
#4 Lost World Of Tambun
Lost World of Tambun in the town of Ipoh, Perak offers a unique experience of fun and culture to visitors rolled into one.
Operated by the conglomerate Sunway Group, the 40-acre Lost World of Tambun boasts an incredible seven day parks, which include a street modelled after Ipoh, water park, amusement park, adventure park, tin-mining inspired park, animal zoos. At night, the park transforms into hot springs, which are a popular feature of the town.

Getting there: Travelers can drive to the Lost World of Tambun in Ipoh. The drive will take around six hours from Singapore, which can cost an estimated RM400 (S$121.47) – RM600 (S$182.20), according to Rome2Rio.
Accommodation: You can stay at the Sunway Lost World Hotel, which is linked to the parks. Hotel guests are entitled to free access to night parks. A family suite, which sleeps four guests, come at the price of RM851 (S$258.43) per night.
Other expenses: The park has limited dining options, with a food street that sells bites and desserts and a Dulang Tea House that serves Hainan-style breakfast. However, visitors can drive outside of the park to enjoy local Chinese fare and kopitiam food.
#5 Sunway Lagoon
Sunway Lagoon offers the most diverse range of attractions spread across six zones including a dry park, a wildlife park, a horror house, an extreme sports park and two water parks.
With 90 attractions sprawling across 88 acres of land, there is something for everyone whether it’s young families who want to enjoy some splashing fun or thrill-seekers who want to try out ziplining or a nature ATV ride.
Tickets: Admission tickets include entry to all parks, but not applicable for pay-per-ride activities such as Bungy Jump, G-Force X, Go Kart and EV boats.
