McDonald's Extra Condiments Charge

Starting from 2 January 2025, McDonald’s will start charging customers $0.50 to $0.70 extra for certain condiments beyond a standard portion included with their meals.

While their Ketchup and Garlic Chilli sauces will remain free, within reasonable limits, a range of other popular condiments, including the Curry, BBQ, Honey Mustard sauces for McNuggets, Salad Dressing for salads, Hotcakes Syrup and Whipped Butter for Hotcakes will start incurring a small charge.

Marking a significant shift in the way McDonald’s serves its signature meals, this is a response to growing concerns over food waste and the rising costs of ingredients in the F&B industry. As diners become more mindful of their environmental impact and the rising costs of living, this move may prompt a wider conversation about what we take for granted in our fast-food experience.

Types Of McDonald’s Condiments That Will Incur Extra Charges?

Under their new Condiments Policy, ketchup and garlic chilli sauce will remain complimentary, provided they are within the fixed allocation per food order. Other condiments will also be provided up to the allocated quantity for your order, and requests for additional sauces will incur a charge.

Chicken McNuggets dipping sauces: (BBQ, Curry, Honey Mustard)

Between 1 and 4 tubs of these sauces will be provided based on the number of Nuggets you order, as well as the meal type that you select. Each additional tub of sauce will cost $0.50, after the allocated quantity is given.

Hotcakes Syrup

Just 1 tub of Hotcakes Syrup will be given with each standard order of 2pc Hotcakes, Hotcakes, Hotcakes with Sausage or Breakfast Deluxe. Subsequent requests for additional Hotcakes Syrup will cost $0.50 per tub.

Whipped Butter Pad

2 pieces of Whipped Butter Pad will be given with standard Hotcakes orders, while just 1 piece will be given for order of all sizes of Corn. Additional pieces of Whipped Butter Pad will cost $0.50 each.

What Happens When You Order Extra Condiments From McDonalds?

McDonald’s already allocates of a portion of condiments that takes into consideration the appropriate number of sauce packs to be enjoyed with its food orders. If you wish to order more sauces, you will have to indicate the number of extra sauces required during the ordering process.

For example, a six-piece Chicken McNuggets meal comes with one complimentary tub of either its Curry, BBQ or Honey Mustard sauce. If you want an additional tub, it will cost S$0.50. Similarly, if you were to order a breakfast deluxe meal, you will get 1 tub of Hotcakes Syrup and 2 pieces of Whipped Butter Pads. Each extra tub of Hotcakes Syrup and piece of Whipped Butter Pad will cost $0.50 more.

If your extra sauce is missing from your order, you can get in touch with its managers or customer care representatives for a refund for the missing sauces that you paid for.

Potential Domino Effect In The F&B Industry?

This policy change has sparked mixed reactions among customers. Some on reddit have expressed frustration over the additional charges, especially considering the rising prices of fast-food items. While others, on the Hardwarezone forum, understand the rationale behind the move, recognising the need to manage food waste and control costs.

Nevertheless, given the global magnitude of influence which McDonald’s already has on Singaporeans, it is likely that many of us would still visit the iconic Golden Arches for our desired fast-food fix.

Not only that, its clout may also mean that other fast food and F&B establishments follow its lead to start charging for sauces that they provide.
