Planning a quick getaway but dreading the hassle and cost of travel insurance? Imagine being able to cover your trip for just $3 a day!

Enter Income FlexiTravel Hourly Insurance — perfect for those spontaneous jaunts to Malaysia, Batam, or Bintan.

Whether you’re heading out for a food-and-massage getaway in Johor Bahru or a relaxing weekend in Penang, this insurance offers the protection you need at a fraction of the cost.

Let’s take a closer look and see why this could be the perfect travel companion for your next short adventure.

To me, travel and insurance go hand-in-hand, and there are no two ways about it. As it turns out, we did encounter a few mishaps when overseas and travel insurance saved the day.

A lot of people don’t know that hourly coverage for travel insurance has been available since 2022, and I love this product!

The first thing to be aware of is that the coverage provided by the Income FlexiTravel Hourly Insurance is a subset of what we get from conventional travel insurance.

This is a necessary trade-off, given that what we are paying for the Income FlexiTravel Hourly Insurance is a mere fraction of what conventional travel insurance costs.

Below is a table I have put together comparing the FlexiTravel Hourly Insurance against the Income Travel Insurance (Classic Plan).

You can see that overlapping sections aside, some benefits are solely provided by the Income FlexiTravel Hourly Insurance, which specifically targets Singaporeans who head to our neighbouring countries for shopping and golfing.

FlexiTravel Hourly Insurance is really affordable at 30 cents per hour up to a maximum of $3 per day. This would be perfect for last-minute day trips to Johor Bahru (JB) for delicious food and relaxing massages.

With the FlexiTravel Hourly Insurance, we have the flexibility to shorten our trip coverage if we decide to return to Singapore early. Or perhaps we got lucky, and there weren’t traffic jams at the customs! This means that we won’t end up overpaying for something that we don’t need.

Apart from the cost factor, the other main issue with travel insurance is that friends and family often find it a hassle to buy them! The FlexiTravel Hourly Insurance provides a no-frills activation process purely via the Income mobile app, and we can rely on SingPass to fill in our details.

A common worry these days is unauthorised charges made to our travel cards, especially when so many of us are using options such as Trust and YouTrip overseas for the best exchange rates. Protection against fraudulent charges made to our travel cards is a nice feature to have.

The FlexiTravel Hourly Insurance is only available for trips to Malaysia, Batam and Bintan islands. This product is designed specifically to provide protection for short trips to nearby destinations only. Having said that, Malaysia is actually a rather huge country, and weekend trips to destinations such as Malacca, Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh, and Penang are extremely popular with Singaporeans. I can see myself using it like I did over the past two years.

If you look closely at the policy benefits, you will notice that the FlexiTravel Hourly Insurance does not cover trip cancellation, postponement, disruption and delay. This might not be what you are looking for if you’re a planner by nature and avoid last-minute trips.

Also, travel agency insolvency is not covered. Then again, I think most people don’t rely on travel agencies for trips to Malaysia, Batam, or Bintan, right?

The FlexiTravel Hourly Insurance is perfect for ad hoc trips and short getaways where there is minimal risk of cancellation or postponement. However, it would not be ideal for trips booked weeks or months in advance.

If you are looking primarily to address your main concerns, such as minor accidents, medical incidents, or safety issues in neighbouring countries, then the FlexiTravel Hourly Insurance would be a suitable and low-cost product. As you can see from the table above, the coverage amount is also lower.

A specific group of travellers who often visit our neighbouring countries are golfers, and there are specific clauses that address this. Given the frequency of travel

If you are also a fan of ad-hoc trips to our neighbours, FlexiTravel Hourly Insurance is an affordable and hassle-free option.

Remember how hot the weather was just a few weeks ago? We escaped to Batam and stayed for a couple of nights just for the fun of it.

During the day, we worked in the hotel and blasted the air conditioning 24/7 without caring about the electricity bills. When we felt adventurous, we went to cafes and seafood restaurants for meals.

Grab and GoJek for both food and transport are extremely value-for-money, and we use them all the time by pairing them with our Trust card for zero FX fees.

Income FlexiTravel Hourly Insurance covers up to a maximum of 7 days and we would usually come back to Singapore once we got sick of the food (haha).

Travel insurance can be a hassle, especially for short trips, but Income FlexiTravel Hourly Insurance offers a practical and affordable solution. Here are three key points to remember about this convenient coverage option:

Cost-Effective: At just $3 per day, this hourly insurance is a budget-friendly alternative to conventional travel insurance.Flexible Coverage: Designed for short trips to Malaysia, Batam, and Bintan, it provides essential protection without unnecessary extras.Easy Activation: You can quickly activate the insurance via the Income mobile app, making it hassle-free and perfect for last-minute plans.

These are my preferred choices for travel insurance when I travel overseas, especially when I have successfully made claims for the policies that I have purchased in the past.
